On the Sentencing of Catherine Frances Lyon

John Fauerby and Lynne Rosenbusch died needlessly because Lyon chose to drive drunk. Bike Maryland supports jail time and continues to encourage our legislators and judges to have zero tolerance for drunk drivers.

Cyclists have a legal right to use the road but are more vulnerable to death or serious injury. A greater standard of care must be required of drivers and the penalties should be stiffer when these laws are violated and kill or injure cyclists or other vulnerable road users.

Bike Maryland will continue to work with our government officials to ensure that our judicial system respects cyclists and penalizes to the fullest extent of the law those who choose to drive while impaired or distracted.

Catherine Francis Lyon pleaded guilty to two counts of automobile manslaughter. The car she was driving struck and killed John Faurerby and Lynne Rosenbush, who were riding their tandem. On August 5, she was sentenced in Calvert County Circuit Court to 20 years in prison with all but 3 years suspended and required to complete 1000 hours of community service.
